What We Do

Our sole purpose is to serve individuals and families in the community of Borgne, Haiti. Drawing upon our volunteers and contributors, we work in solidarity with local grassroots organizations and individuals as they reach for a just, equitable society with hope for a brighter future. What all of these initiatives have in common is that they seek to relieve suffering, promote local empowerment and ensure ongoing sustainability. These programs rely upon H.O.P.E.’s support to help get them started, but are implemented with a view to long range self-sufficiency.

Guided by the aspirations of the local community leaders, in concert with the people of Borgne we pursue three key objectives:

Health Care

The wealthy nations of the world know what it takes to improve child health and survival but in Borgne children still die because they lack access to basic care and services.

One of every eight children born in Haiti dies before the age of five, most due to totally preventable or treatable causes. Impoverished parents often give birth to under-weight babies. These infants are more likely to die and children who do survive face limited opportunities to reach their full potential. The chronic malnutrition and frequent illness related to extreme poverty undermine health at all ages. Without access to basic health services, people in each generation remain equally vulnerable to the health problems of extreme poverty - if they manage to survive at all.

H.O.P.E. is committed to improve community health services. Our goal is to ensure access to preventive health programs, diagnostic and clinical care facilities, medications and immunizations, These are attainable goals as we adopt the proven Partners in Health model to become a preferred option for the poor in Borgne, Haiti.

Education

Providing educational and training resources needed to cultivate new talent and capabilities within the community

Every person has the right to human development and needs access to information and training on basic health, nutrition and disease prevention. Borgne’s poverty level increases the likelihood of low education as families cannot afford the luxury of sending children to school. In this subsistence economy children begin working at a very young age to support their families’ needs. This in turn leads to a repetitive cycle of educational deprivation in each generation. Equitable access to education is essential for Borgne’s children and adults to achieve their true human potential and build a brighter future. H.O.P.E.'s Educational programs are aimed at community-wide access to literacy, education and access to human development resources.

At the same time, we are developing and delivering community services training programs in health and sanitation. These programs are needed for disease prevention and to improve basic community health. They are delivered through H.O.P.E.'s Community Services/ Technology Center staffed by local workers and volunteers.

Economic Development

Aiding economic development to reduce vulnerability and instability; and to build a sustainable base for the future...

There has been a grave misconception among many wealthy societies that Haiti’s extreme poverty is a self-inflicted condition that must be corrected by those who suffer from it. In reality, Haiti’s legacy of poverty is a complex condition that has been inherited since the colonial slavery era; and has been compounded by generations of declining attention from within and outside this nation. It is not through any lack of willingness or aptitude that Borgne’s people suffer from extreme poverty… there is a dire need for development of new economic opportunities that can be sustained by the population.

H.O.P.E. engages with peasant leaders, community groups, and cooperatives to develop and support sustainable ventures that can provide employment and deliver needed infrastructure, products and services to the community.
