Dr. Thony--our Medical Director--made sure his staff was vaccinated before he was, and, now the whole team at Alyans Sante Borgne Hospital have received the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccination. Dr. Thony and the team are also working hard to ensure that the community of Borgne has access to the vaccine and understands the benefits of vaccination. As is the case in the United States, medical professionals in Haiti are fighting a misinformation campaign. Thus, members of our team are turning to community leaders for help. Dr. Thony, who was born and raised in Borgne, sat down with one of the teachers from his childhood who had inspired him to excel in school, asking: "would I, this man who grew from the boy in your care, return to do anything that would hurt you?" His teacher, Mr. B, suffers from hypertension and diabetes, both of which place him in a category of high-risk. He assented to the vaccine, trusting Dr. Thony. The leadership of this mentoring duo helps affirm to others in Borgne that the vaccine is indeed trustworthy!
